The most frequently asked question when we are traveling for the first time is “how to plan a trip”, and the amount of information we can find out there can be a bit overwhelming.

Planning a trip has so many steps and so many things we have to keep in mind. However, that shouldn’t stop us from having the best time of our lives because it doesn’t hurt anyone to improvise from time to time.

And today, as I know how confusing it can be to plan your first trip, I wanted to share 10 tips to plan a trip, no matter the destination. Plus, stay until the end to get a free travel planner!

How to Plan a Trip: A Beginners Guide

Set a Budget

One of the most important steps to have a good and smooth trip is to set a budget. Why? This will help us better plan our itinerary, and know the places we want to visit and restaurants where we want to eat.

Setting a budget is also essential to be mindful of our expenses and look for accommodations with time, plus to get enough souvenirs for everyone and ourselves! This will guide your planning process and help you make decisions along the way.

Choose Your Destination

Why does choosing our destination come after setting a budget? Easy, our destination is going to depend on the amount of money we’re willing to spend on the trip.

If, for example, you’re only planning to spend around $1,000 you may have to visit an affordable destination such as Colombia or Mexico. But, if you’re willing to spend more, you can go to more expensive destinations like Iceland.

Plan Your Itinerary

Once you know where you’re going it is time to plan your itinerary. For this step you’re going to keep in mind some essential things like:

  • Is there any specific place you must visit?
  • Is that place all right for your budget?
  • How close are the places to one another?
  • How much time are you going to spend on average?

Book Accommodation

Once you’ve decided on your destination and dates, and know the places you’re going to visit, it’s time to book your accommodation in advance to secure the best deals and availability.

Remember to always keep in mind your budget, the place you’re visiting, and the reviews of the Airbnb! That way you’ll have the best experience ever.

Arrange Transportation

Now that you know your budget, where you’re staying, and your itinerary, is time to know how transportation will work for you.

Research your transportation options and book flights, trains, or rent cars, depending on the places you’re visiting and your budget.

Time to Pack

My favorite part! The very best tip I can give you about packing is to have a list. That way you’ll know what to pack and when you’re going to use it so you can optimize the space on your luggage.

Always pack versatile clothing and essential items, and don’t forget any necessary documents like passports, visas, or travel insurance.

Prepare Your Finances

Imagine being on a trip and your bank blocks your credit card thinking it was stolen. We don’t want that, right? So notify your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with using your cards abroad.

Plus, always have a mix of cash and cards for flexibility, and consider currency exchange rates and fees. That way it’s going to be way easier to move around.

Research Local Customs and Laws

This one is something we often forget. Especially when visiting countries that have a culture very different from ours.

So familiarize yourself with the culture, and laws to avoid any misunderstandings or disrespectful behavior.

Oh, and this one includes knowing basic phrases in the local language if you’re traveling to a foreign country. So go download Duolingo and start practicing!

Stay Organized

Every time I’m talking about solo traveling I try to remind you to always keep all your travel documents, reservations, and important information in one place. This will help you stay organized and have everything you need close to you when traveling.

Stay Flexible

While it’s always good to have a plan, be prepared for unexpected changes or delays, and have fun!

At the end of the day, it’s a trip and your vacation. So try not to be so firm on the itinerary you have. If you discover something new that only locals recommend, then go! Don’t force yourself to just do things that are on your plan, have fun!

And that, my friend, is how to plan a trip if you’re a complete beginner. I hope this was helpful!
