Best Things to Do in Colombia: Your Ultimate Colombia Bucket List

Colombia is now one of those places that we all must visit at least once in our lives. And as it is a big country full of culture and fun activities, we might wonder what are some things to do in Colombia. Especially, if we’re going there for the first time.

I decided I’m going to do a whole Colombia travel series, this bucket list is going for things to do in the county, but I’ll do one based on cities I visited, and also I’ll post a Colombia packing list. What do you think?

Best Things to Do in Colombia (Even if You’re Traveling Alone)

Explore Bogotá

La Candeleria: Visit the historic district of La Candeleria, where you’ll find colonial buildings, museums for all types of travelers and super cute cafes.

Gold Museum (Museo del Oro): This one is the home for one the largest collections of pre-Hispanic gold objects and crafts. It’s a must go for those who admire both history and art.

Monserrate: Take a cable car or hike up to this mountain to experience one of the best views of the city. Plus, if you’re a fan of visiting cathedrals (like myself, idk but there’s something about them that always makes me go like “wow”), then you must visit El Señor Caído (the Fallen Lord).

Things to do in Medellín, Colombia

Visit Medellín

Comuna 13: You must visit this transformed neighborhood in Colombia. Comuna 12 is know for its vibrant street art and community projects. So, if you’re into discovering new artists and learning about the culture and art of a country you’re visiting, then this a must in your Colombia bucket list.

Botero Plaza: Yes, I’m continuing with Colombian aritists here. In Botero Plaza you can find the large sculptures by Colombian artist Fernando Botero.

Parque Arví: If you’re into ecotourism, then this is a must-visit place. Parque Arví is an ecological park perfect for hiking lovers and doing any outdoor activities.

Guatapé: This isn’t really in Medellín, but people usually visit it while being there. Guatapé is a city located about 2 hours from Medellín it’s one of the most gorgeous cities in Colombia. This Colombian destination is known for being one of the most beautiful and colorful cities in Colombia.

Plus, in Guatapé you can visit El Peñón de Guatapé, a big rock with a 740 stairs y 220 mts high. Visiting it is a total experience.

Old City (Ciudad Amurallada): Another great option if you love learning about the culture and history of a country. This beautiful city, also known as the walled city, is full of beautiful colonial architecure, plazas and historic churches.

Castillo San Felipe de Barajas: This is a historic fortress surrounded by a panoramic view of the city. It’s a gorgeous instagrammable spot in Colombia.

Rosario Islands: Cartagena is not only the city, but also islands beautiful Caribbean islands perfect for snorkeling and relaxation. So, you better take a boat trip to these stunning Caribbean spot.

Getsemaní: Visit a vibrant neighborhood full with gorgeous hostels and a lively and partying atmosphere.

Experience the Coffee Triangle

Coffee Farms: Did you know that Colombia exports one of the best types of coffee in the world? So, if you’re a coffee lover (like me), then you should take a tour through the coffee plantation in regions like Manizales, Armenia, or Pereira.

Valle de Cocora: Another coffee spot for your bucket list. If you like to hike, then you should go through towering wax palms in this stunning valley near Salento.

Relax in the Caribbean Coast

I am from a Caribbean Island, and whenever I hear the world beach“, I know it should be in my list, so of course the Caribbean Coast should be in this list of things to do in Colombia.

Santa Marta: Being one of the oldest cities in Colombia, with gorgeous beaches, this is a must-visit city in Colombia.

The Lost City: Often compared to Machu Pichu, this is city is an ancient archaeological site located in Sierra Nevada. It’s usually a tour that takes about 5 days.

Explore the Pacific Coast

Nuquí and Bahía Solano: This is for you if you love to go whale watching (July to October), surfing, and enjoying peaceful and beautiful beaches.

Utría National Natural Park: Do you like to explore mangroves and rainforests? Then the Utría National Natural Park must be in your bucket list. Plus, this is a great spot to also admire their marine life.

Festivals in Colombia

Experience Colombia’s Festivals

Carnival of Barranquilla: If you’re into festivals and carnivals, this shouldn’t be out of your bucket list. The Carnival of Barranquilla is one of the largest and most colorful carnivals in the worlds, so it’s a must-see.

Festival of the Flowers (Feria de las Flores) in Medellín: This festival takes time during May, and you enjoy enjoy parades, flower displays, and cultural events all over the city. It’s like being in a magical garden.
